Lunch at the allotment

Hi all

Happy new year! I know we are a few days late in wishing that but better late than never. Over the Christmas break I managed to do a lot more clearing at the allotment, carrying on with our plan of three long beds on the footprint of the previous raised beds. All last week at work I had been looking forward to the weekend, having made plans for the allotment. One of the new things I wanted to try out was cooking some food on a little bucket BBQ while I worked.

Lunch is served!

How to build a fire

Hi all

I have the luxury of experience with lighting stoves since a young age; I grew up in an old cottage that had 3 multi-fuel stoves which we used as a major source of warmth. This being the case when I was old enough to do so I got plenty of practice in lighting fires and keeping them running. From what I can see more and more households are using stoves for heating, which is good to see. This being the case I thought I’d share some of my experience here.

A very comforting sight

New log store

Hi all,

Over the summer we were busy building a healthy stock pile of firewood for this winter. Amidst the activity cutting and splitting the logs, one key element that we have recently taken care of is a decent store to keep the worst of the rain off of them, so they will be good to bring straight in for the fire. With the exception of some screws all of the materials used here I’ve salvaged.

A very pleasing sight – a decently stocked wood store

July update

Hi all!

A few days late for a July update but there we go! What a summer it’s been so far. We have had the first rain here in about 10 weeks and given how much we have neglected watering our allotment, things have done surprisingly well. We have been using some of the herbs from our little herb garden and have noticed the difference from dried supermarket herbs. We have also been making the most of the heat to dry next winter’s firewood.

Free heating

Hi all,

Happy 2018! Just got a few thoughts and ideas to share on our first real sustainable task: heating our home. We are really fortunate that our landlord had installed a multi-fuel burner in the living room and has given us permission to use it. With this we have found that with a small fire we can heat the whole house. Even with the recent cold snaps we haven’t used any of the electric heaters in the house thanks to this.

Results of our last lumberjack session which will keep us going for a good couple of weeks
