July update

Hi all!

A few days late for a July update but there we go! What a summer it’s been so far. We have had the first rain here in about 10 weeks and given how much we have neglected watering our allotment, things have done surprisingly well. We have been using some of the herbs from our little herb garden and have noticed the difference from dried supermarket herbs. We have also been making the most of the heat to dry next winter’s firewood.

We have harvested our potato crop, which amounted to a healthy quantity of both varieties (‘King Edward’ and ‘Charlotte’). The King Eddie’s had a decent number however the size wasn’t as generous as we might have hoped; a lack of water is more likely the culprit there. The Charlottes however have given us some decent sized spuds, and a few nights ago we boiled some of them up to go with dinner – a really satisfying meal. The perpetual spinach is coming into its own now and we have used this in a few meals. The courgette plants are giving us a steady supply of food too. We haven’t been overrun with them as is usually the case; again probably due to the dry summer. As I’m sure anyone reading from the east of England will agree the last 10 weeks have been tough with the weather. In our area up until last weekend we hadn’t had a drop of rain at all, which has affected plants all over. Theres only a limited amount you can done with a watering can!

Tom cooked a lasagne the other night (again using home grown courgettes) and this time I used some fresh basil and oregano straight from our little herb garden. Admittedly we have a good stock of dried supermarket herbs to cook with, however we have started growing our own herbs in pots in the garden at home. While eating Sarah commented on the flavour and then I told her about the herbs; goes to show home grown ingredients stand out. Once our stocks of dried herbs run out we will harvest and dry our home grown staple herbs to give us our supply if we need dried for whatever reason.

As crazy as this sounds I have been stock piling wood for winter. One of the first posts on here was all about free heating; as a gardener I sometimes get asked to fell trees and large shrubs, and depending on its suitability I offer to take the wood away for free so I can saw it up and split it for firewood. Although the thought of a hot cosy fire is the last thing on my mind with the current extended heatwave, it certainly is seasoning our logs nicely for the winter!
